| So check this out, y'all: I have a lot of friends who write, perform, and produce music—and I think that it's only right and fair to promote their stuff just as much as I promote my own! As many of folks reading this already know, I listen to all manner of music, from gritty ol' backwoods bluegrass to chrome-polished K-pop to weird electronic spazcore made by geeks like me on their laptops—so you never know what I might be recommending here...but I can guarantee you that if you have a musically-open mind (and why wouldn't you?), chances are you'll find something you really like amongst the volumes of material my homepersons crank out. Fortunately, as you will see, most—if not all of it—is available via Bandcamp just like my stuff! Alright, let's get to it now, shall we? Scott Spindler and Rosanna Patera are wonderful people: Scot-tay was a fellow Commercial Music Tech major at Cal U who graduated in 2012; Rosanna is an education major who is nonetheless deeply involved with a number of projects in the Music Department, including (until recently) Cal U's pre-eminent female acappella group Acapella Stella (that's Rosanna melting your face off on lead vox in that video). Together, they write and perform lovely, very listenable acoustic rock/folk music that will especially appeal to fans of, say, Sara Bareilles, Hootie & The Blowfish, and most definitely Barenaked Ladies. The music on 3 Cheers is sunny (even though there are some clouds casting shadows on "Lost my way"), peppy, family-friendly, and just plain ol' fun. Scott's a hell of a guitar player and a solid vocalist, and Rosanna's voice is like buttah. If these two don't become the next Sonny & Cher, I'll eat my Oxygen25 MIDI controller. The album was recorded at Cal U's Gallagher Hall Studio by my homeboy Matt Poirier, the Wizard of Pro-Tools and Master of the Mic. Matt's a very thoughtful producer with a real knack for recording and balancing vocals, which will be become immediately apparent on listening to this album. His production style is straight out of Sound City circa 1978: he always manages to make any recording, even one pieced together from tracks laid down at different times in different studios using different equipment, sound like it was recorded live. Listening to 3 Cheers, you'll probably feel like Scott & Rosanna are right there in your livingroom/bedroom/-garage/torture-chamber or wherever you go to listen to good jams. This album is definitely Scott & Rosanna's show, but take a minute to give Matt some props for being a smart producer, eh? Scott & Rosanna perform live all around the Mon Valley area, and I think make it up to Pittsburgh every now and then—so if you're from southwestern Pennsylvania or, for some unknown reason possibly involving mothmen and/or UFOs, you just find yourself in southwestern PA one day when Scott & Rosanna are playing, check 'em out! And tell 'em Pegritz sent you! |
